Abstract

By analyzing the changes of Japanese economic environment, this paper probes into the evolution of human resource management (HRM) model in Japanese companies. Economic pressures led to the collapse of lifetime employment, the replacement of seniority by performance evaluation, and the weakening of the role of corporate unions. HRM in Japan is shifting towards a mixed model, facing challenges of informal employment, promotion and gender equality.
