Abstract

This paper examines the challenges and strategies in translating Chinese food culture into English within cross-cultural contexts. Food culture, encompassing culinary traditions, social values, and historical influences, reflects a society’s identity, necessitating translations that transcend linguistic accuracy to address cultural nuances. Current issues include overreliance on literal translation, neglect of cultural differences, excessive conciseness eroding cultural context, and grammatical inconsistencies. Effective translation requires balancing cultural commonalities and disparities to mitigate communication barriers and foster mutual understanding. Translators must integrate socio-cultural awareness, linguistic proficiency, and audience sensitivity, moving beyond mere technical skills to preserve authenticity.
